Oakland-based psychedelic folk rockers Whiskerman will be supporting acid-jazz/funk masters Sun Hop Fat this Friday at The Chapel. At first glance it may seem like an odd pairing: the former is a four-piece echoing the soulful mad genius of Leon Russell and the eerie, voodoo-possessed days of Dr. John; and the latter is a ten-member dance-party, a roving musical extravaganza specializing in hypnotic grooves and ’70s Afrobeat.
Both, however, know how to work a dance floor with a shared love of rhythm and penchant for enticing melodies. Compare the slinky “Bad News” from Whiskerman’s latest eponymous EP and Sun Hop Fat’s irresistible “Hameta” and you’ll see that these two groups aren’t so different after all. Stylistically they may be world’s apart, but what truly matters is that both can make you get on up.
