We’ve got something a little different for this giveaway: a movie! I know that’s not really what you come here for, but you still might want these. Why? Read on:

The year is 1999, and a pre-teen Jody Amable is just graduating from Disney soundtracks and Original Broadway Cast Recordings to real, actual rock ‘n’ roll. She’s listening to Live105; she’s spending more and more time down the block at Streetlight. At this juncture, her favorite band is probably Green Day.

Sensing a bonding opportunity, her dad takes her to an after-school showing of the theatrical re-release of Stop Making Sense, the 1984 rock-doc of the Talking Heads’ performance at the Pantages. The film features a litany of TH classics like “Psycho Killer,” “Once in a Lifetime” and “Burning Down the House.” It frequently makes top-ten lists of concert films and is widely considered one of the best ever made.

However, none of this matters to 12-year-old Jody. Halfway through, she leans over to her poor father, who is just trying to be a good parent, and hisses, “This is SO BORING. Can we go?”

At that time, Stop Making Sense was, to me, just some corny old concert film where all the girls had bad hair and some weirdo wobbled around in a ridiculous suit. Turns out I almost walked out on one of the most influential concert films of all time. Huh. Who knew? (My dad, clearly).

In case you were too young to appreciate its genius the last time it came around, now’s your chance to see it on the big screen…again.

To celebrate the film’s digital release, Stop Making Sense is hitting select theaters, and in our fair city is gracing the Balboa Theatre on August 14th. If you’d like your chance to see it on the big screen, we have a pair of tickets to give away to the event. Whether or not you bring your smartass teenage daughter is up to you.
