Steel Cranes Before Dawn

Oakland duo Steel Cranes‘ debut LP Ouroboros was one of the Bay Area’s heaviest records of 2013, and they followed that release with a lengthy fall US tour and a West Coast swing this spring. Now they’re back with a video for another track off Ouroboros, “Before Dawn”, which is the third video off the album and premieres exclusively here on The Bay Bridged.

The “Before Dawn” video features Steel Cranes donning some pretty sweet red, single-piece pajamas – both on stage and high up in the mountains in a field of snow. “We shot the video on our West Coast tour last May,” singer and guitarist Tracy Shapiro wrote recently over email. “The live performance shots are from our Olympia, Washington show at Le Voyeur. The outdoor shots are from Crater Lake, Oregon.”

[Schukle, drummer] and I are incredibly talented ‘air musicians’ and we’ve been dying to show off our skills,” Shapiro explained. “We are also suckers for beautiful nature backdrops so when we laid eyes on Crater Lake while taking a detour en route to our show in Eugene, we knew in our hearts that we had found the perfect scenery to accompany our envy-inducing moves.”

Not sure there’s a better way to describe their moves – envy-inducing just about sums it up perfectly, whether they’re trying out for the Air Guitar Championships or actually killing it onstage. According to Shapiro, “The camera work and cameos are courtesy of our dear friends and touring partners, Japanese Game Show,” and the band itself did all of the choreography and editing.

Steel Cranes are gearing up for a month-long fall tour – details to come soon. In the meantime, catch Shapiro at Amnesia in San Francisco on August 26, where she’ll be doing musical comedy and stand up under her own name as part of the venue’s Weekly Comedy Showcase.
