It’s difficult to imagine life after Phono del Sol – we get it. Yes, the possibility that any summer music festival could top what Phono has to offer this Saturday seems impossible. But should you be ready to venture back out onto the festival circuit by, say, August, there’s an amazing weekend awaiting you in an enchanted forest outside of Portland – Pickathon.
Taking place August 1–3, 2014 at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon (15 minutes from downtown Portland), Pickathon features six beautiful stages nestled in the woods and musical acts covering a vast array of genres, including Nickel Creek, X, Blind Pilot, The War On Drugs, Warpaint, Mac DeMarco, Foxygen, and many, many more. Plus, one of our favorite local sons – Mr. Mikal Cronin – will be venturing up the coast to play for the lucky 3,500 fans that find their way to Pickathon.
Watch the teaser video for this year’s festival to get an idea of how unique Pickathon’s rural woodland setting truly is:
As with most festivals, it’s important to plan your days at Pickathon, but another distinctive feature of this festival makes this process much easier than normal – each act plays at least two times, and they never play the same stage twice. The festival guarantees a totally different vibe from one performance to the next, as the individual stages vary in terms of their environment (Exhibit A and Exhibit B).
Other than music, what else is going on at Pickathon, you ask? Well for starters, they’ll have plenty of tasty adult beverages from all local Oregon brewers, cider makers, wineries, and distilleries. Need to soak up some of that alcohol? Pickathon’s food selection is out of this world, featuring some of Portland’s best restaurants. Last year’s full food and drink menu is available here and this year’s selection is supposed to be nearly identical, plus a few extras – just be sure wipe up that drool off your chin.
If you’re wondering how they’re going to feed the festival’s 3,500 attendees and not leave a whole load of garbage at the farm, you’re in for a treat – Pickathon is a zero-single-use event and will have Pickathon 2014 Klean Kanteen pints and BambooWare dishware & utensils for all your eating and drinking needs (or you can bring your own, if you’re really feeling self-sufficient and eco-friendly). Find out more about this unique part of Pickathon in their Sustainability Manifesto.
If you want to learn more about the bands playing this year’s Pickathon, the festival also has a great setup with both iTunes and iTunes Radio to help fans “explore, shop, and listen to the complete artist catalog of this year’s lineup.”
