The addition of The Tambo Rays to this year’s Phono del Sol Music Festival lineup could not be more perfect – the band’s psychedelic-laced chillpop sound is the ideal soundtrack for a sunny day in Potrero del Sol Park (or any park for that matter). A sense of openness pervades the quartet’s songs, and their new track “Who Are You” – which we are happy to premiere today on The Bay Bridged – is no different.

Starting out as a bedroom recording project of multi-instrumentalist Brian DaMert, The Tambo Rays eventually coalesced into a quartet with the addition of DaMert’s sister Sara, bassist Greg Sellin, and drummer Bob Jakubs. On the strength of just one six-track cassette (the excellent kaleidoscope) and a handful of singles, the band has blossomed into one of the Bay’s more uniquely promising young acts driven by an unmistakable spaced out and warm NorCal vibe that is present throughout standout tracks like “Indian Summer”, “Rest Your Mind In The Sky”, and “Take That”.

“Who Are You” is the first of three new songs The Tambo Rays plan on releasing in the lead up to a new EP slated for this summer. “We wanted to start things off with a fresh and haunting sound,” Brian told me recently over email, referencing the track’s more subdued (but no less enveloping) sound and the almost menacing feel of the frontman’s vocals.

According to Brian, the drums were tracked at Different Fur Studios, and the rest was done at the house he shares in Oakland with Sara. And, for the first time in the band’s history, Miss DaMert steps out from behind the keys and takes over on lead guitar, again showcasing The Tambo Rays’ versatility and their refusal to search for any particular formula, instead letting each song find its own center within the band’s four corners. Listen to “Who Are You” below.

Be sure to get your tickets to see The Tambo Rays alongside Wye Oak, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Nick Waterhouse, White Fence, and more at Phono del Sol now while they’re still available – you can pick them up over on Phono’s ticketing page powered by Eventbrite. And be sure to catch The Tambo Rays’ last pre-Phono del Sol performance this this Friday at The Independent opening for PAPA on the first night of the L.A.-based act’s new tour in support of last year’s excellent Tender Madness.
