Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks released Wig Out at Jagbags shortly after the New Year, and the record (their sixth studio album and first since 2011’s Mirror Traffic) has been warmly received by most publications, including some much larger media outlets. And the praise is undoubtedly deserved, as the former Pavement frontman and three partners in crime (bassist Joanna Bolme, keyboardist and guitarist Mike Clark, and newly initiated drummer Jake Morris) added yet another engrossing chapter to their discography, fusing old-school indie rock with prog and psychedelia like few others can.
Now, for the first time since the release of Wig Out At Jagbags, Malkmus (who grew up in Stockton, but now lives in Portland) and his crew are coming through the Bay Area, dropping by Slim’s this Thursday, March 27 with Northampton, Massachusetts ’90s-obsessed rockers Speedy Ortiz opening. But guess what? Thursday’s show is already sold out. I know, not surprising for a show involving an indie rock legend. So sate all of your Malkmus-related needs and desires below, where you can watch videos for two tracks off the new album, “Cinnamon & Lesbians” and “Lariat”. Then, head down to 11th Street on Thursday night and beg the nearest concertgoer with an extra.
