Sadie Dupuis, the spunky leader of Speedy Ortiz, went solo to cover Josie & the Pussycats’ “Pretend to be Nice” for local label Father/Daughter‘s Record Store Day release, Faux Real. The stripped-down, smokier version captures the song’s bitter flavor, and the impudent Dupuis is the perfect vessel for the track’s message. More tracks from the record include songs adapted from The Muppets, Freaky Friday, The Goofy Movie and more. These will come out April 19 for the official Record Store Day, but move fast—only 500 copies were pressed.
Fans of Speedy Ortiz will be able to catch them soon as well. They’re playing a date this Thursday with Steven Malkmus & the Jicks at Slim’s this Thursday. Tickets are sold out, but there’s always Craigslist!
Father/Daughter has since released a few more tracks from the upcoming compilation as well, via the label’s site.
