Coo Coo Birds & Down Dirty Shake @ Slim's

Psychedelia will be most certainly not be in short supply March 26 when Bay Area psych soul act Down Dirty Shake teams up with SF-based purveyors of frenetic acid rock the Coo Coo Birds for what is sure to be one tripped out evening at Slim’s.

This is actually the first in a slew of Bay Area and Fresno shows over the next few months for Down Dirty Shake, which released a three-track EP The Beauville Boogie back in January. The band’s five members – A.J. Lopez, Kyle De Martini, James Langarica, Aaron Grimes, and Joe Putnam – formed the band in 2005 in Merced, but are now spread out over the extended Bay Area (San Francisco, Rohnert Park, Oakland, and their Central Valley hometown).

De Martini told me recently over email that the band is “planning on releasing a six-track vinyl completely DIY in July,” and that the release will be timed to coincide with their annual residency at Milk Bar on Haight Street. After listening to The Beauville Boogie and their September 2012 set from the Hopmonk Taven, I deeply regret missing their July 2013 residency at Milk Bar, which has quickly put together one of the consistently best calendars in the City in the last year. Listen to The Beauville Boogie below.

The always entertaining Coo Coo Birds headline the evening at Slim’s, fresh off selling their track “Mariposa Venenosa” for an international GoPro commerical, just released a video for their track “Psychedelic Warrior”:

Don’t miss this chance to catch Down Dirty Shake, not to mention a rare opportunity to see the Coo Coo Birds outside of their more natural habitat.
