This Friday may be one of your last chances to catch a great show at San Francisco’s historic Cafe Du Nord, as the century-old building faces new ownership and renovations at the end of the month. New York’s ICEWATER (not be be confused with Chris Bell’s early power pop project or Raekwon’s hip-hop collective) is celebrating a bittersweet album release show supporting its debut LP, Collector’s Edition. Stream songs from the new release below.
Grant Martin, a founding member of ICEWATER, tragically and suddenly passed away in August. Proceeds raised from the show will go to a fund established in Martin’s memory to help under-privileged students pursue their love of music. The band chose to honor the Bay Area native’s memory with the San Francisco performance.
The late guitarist formed the band with Malcom Perkins last year after naturally forming a musical discourse in the living space they shared. Along with percussionist Noah Hecht, keyboardist Michael Rosen and his younger bother Jonathan Rosen on bass, the band crafts American guitar pop melodies on its debut release, which was completed over the month following Martin’s untimely passing.
Friday’s show, co-presented by Professional Fans, will also feature a special performance by acclaimed songwriter Eleanor Friedberger and support from Michael & The Strange Land. As one half of indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces, Friedberger released her first solo album Last Summer via Merge Records in 2011, followed by her June 2013 release Personal Record. Opening band Michael & The Strange Land is a new project formed by Sam Flax guitarist Michael Taras, with Jack Brown and Robin Cadell. Stream “Inside Your Head” below via the band’s SoundCloud.
