North Home, the solo project of Dan Nordheim (guitarist for The Yellow Dress and frontman for The Fancy Dan Band), just released a lovely new video for “Away From Home”, the first track from his self-titled debut. The self-described “creaky folk” album (which is available on vinyl) was recorded over the course of a year in guitarist Peter Famiglietti’s Berkeley kitchen on a 4-track without any intention of making an album. “On the first day we tried a few songs and didn’t get very far until we tried the song ‘Away From Home’,” explains Nordheim. “Peter didn’t know the chords I was playing, so on his first take on electric guitar, he hit a wrong note to open the song, but just kept going. When we listened back, we really liked how spontaneous it felt and how it gave the track some sort of weird magic.” Indeed, the album has a spontaneous, surprising, and raw tone throughout, with the fuzz from the primitive recording setup adding welcome character to the songs. The video for “Away From Home” uses a grainy effect to nicely complement the lonely track. After the video, take in the full North Home debut album along with details of an upcoming show at Lost Church.
