Dustin Wong (a former member of Ponytail) is touring in support of his new album, Mediation of Ecstatic Energy, and will be performing with The Dodos on October 16 at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall.
Mediation of Ecstatic Energy, out September 17 via Thrill Jockey, completes Wong’s trilogy of guitar-loop albums that started with 2010’s Infinite Love. It is his first record since moving back to Japan, and is the follow-up to Toropical Circle, Wong’s collaboration with Japanese singer Takako Minekawa. Thrill Jockey issued a vinyl release of that collaboration in July.
Expanding upon the complexity of Infinite Love and last year’s Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads, the forthcoming album unleashes Wong’s uncanny abilities as a solo artist and raises the bar for what can be accomplished with a guitar and a few pedals. It may seem unlikely that the expansive, flourishing compositions on the album can come from a single performer, but that’s what makes Dustin Wong’s live performances so captivating.
Opening track “The Big She” and new single “Liberal Christian Youth Ministry” both find Wong employing some of his most aggressive sounds to date, without sacrificing an ounce of the atmospheric beauty which makes his music so engrossing. Hear the two tracks below. Mediation of Ecstatic Energy will be streaming in its entirety on Pitchfork Advance through September 16.
