Tim Presley’s fuzzed-out voice might not be the first thing you’d expect to hear on the B-side of a new underground electronic artist’s 7” – unless that artist is Al Lover.
Al Lover, the moniker of San Francisco beat maker Alex Gundlach, completely debunks what we think of as new electronic music. Gundlach has embarked on a path somewhere in between sample-heavy psychedelic like Flying Lotus and the earlier works by DJ Shadow. It’s no surprise that the new record is being released by UK label PNK SLM Records.
The 7” kicks off with “Vodun Moon”, opening with a sample declaring music as the “personal ambassador and personal nemesis,” then launching into an upbeat psychedelic track that pounds and reels the listener in before firing up into fast drums.
The B-side “Snake Hands” dives even deeper into how psychedelic rock and electronic beats can collide, giving us a taste of White Fence’s iconic vocals, melting into the pit that oozes classic LSD vibes.
If there ever was an electronic artist perfect for DJing a psych rock show, Al Lover is the holy grail. Catch him on September 25th with The Love Dimension, Electric Magpie and Joel Gion of Brian Jonestown Massacre at Brick and Mortar Music Hall.
