From the Edge of the World: California Punk 1977-81 is hot off the press. Photographer Ruby Ray presents a collection of her raw, black & white photos. You will find The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Avengers, X, The Dils, The Screamers, Crime, The Cramps and more, and the book also includes a 16-song CD of Ray’s favorite bands. Buy it now right here! Factrix, the band that graces the book’s cover, plays its 1st show in 30 years at the Night Light on July 26th.
In celebration of the book’s release, Stranded Records hosted a sweet Sunday evening showcase. Penelope Houston (of the Avengers) took the stage first with autoharp in hand. John Doe (of X) played second, and both were backed by the amazing pedal steel and mandolin stylings of Tom Heyman.
Penelope played quite a bit from her last recording On Market Street. She returns July 8th at Pegasus Books. John played a moving cover of Dave Alvin’s very timely “Fourth of July.” Doe plays the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley on July 26th and Far West Fest in Point Reyes on July 27th.
Thanks to the great Stranded Records for another fine in-store. Keep ’em coming! The next one is on July 12th. Mike McGonigal from YETI and Social Music Records will stop by the shop for an evening of gospel music, and he’ll be screening My Life Will Be Sweeter Someday, a brand-new, 45-minute video made just for this event.
