SF’s own Coo Coo Birds keep climbing up the rock and roll food chain, self-releasing a solid debut LP, recording their sophomore effort with cameos from the likes of Steve Mackay (of The Stooges fame), opening for Jonathan Richman at Great American, staging a raucous psychedelic bus tour through SXSW, and recording yet another album at Ardent Studios in Memphis – all in the span of the last year. Now they’ve secured an opening spot for White Denim‘s July 6 gig at The Independent, and we’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away to couple lucky readers.
Last Fall, I brought you behind the scenes of the recording of that aforementioned sophomore effort, entitled Psychedelic Warrior, and despite originally intending to release the album in November, the band shelved it until this coming Halloween in order to give it the proper promotional push, according to drummer Ryan Zweng. Zweng also told me that the track “Black Blues Jeans” (which Mackay did the sax takes for) will be released on its own in the run-up to the official All Hallows’ Eve drop date for Psychedelic Warrior. Watch a clip of Coo Coo Birds playing “Black Blue Jeans” aboard a sailboat in San Francisco Bay below.
The sessions at Memphis’ Ardent Studios were for the band’s third LP Mexican Cowboys, and they teamed up with engineer Adam Hill, who worked on The White Stripes’ Get Behind Me Satan and The Raconteurs’ debut Broken Boy Soldiers. “Ardent is where the likes of legends like Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Big Star, and more recorded, so the ghosts of rock and roll royalty were floating around,” Zweng said. They plan on releasing that album in 2014.
The Independent show will celebrate the limited edition vinyl release of Coo Coo Birds’ 2012 debut LP Don’t Bring Your Boyfriends (previously only available through Bandcamp and band-ripped CD-Rs) via Feedbands, a monthly subscription vinyl service. The trio is currently playing a bunch of shows in Texas, where they went to pick up an RV they were donated during their SXSW trip. The warm-up gigs are doing their job, as Zweng told me to “look forward to a locked in and tight show at The Indy!” Details on the show and how to win a pair of tickets are below.
