Oakland post-punk quartet Wax Idols are making a big stand this year, already having recovered from standout festival performances at SXSW and Noise Pop showcases. The band will headline a show at Brick & Mortar Music Hall on Saturday, March 30, with support from The Mallard, Chasms, and DJ Nako. The gig comes just four days after the release of the the band’s highly anticipated sophomore LP, Discipline & Desire, out March 26 on Slumberland Records. The label released a three-song sampler of the album on its SoundCloud, which you can stream below.
While Wax Idols’ debut LP No Future was written and recorded primarily by frontwoman Hether Fortune, Discipline & Desire is more of a full band effort. Jen Mundy (rhythm guitar/vocals), Amy Rosenoff (bass), and Keven Tecon (drums) all contributed to the writing and recording process. Building upon the foundations of Bay Area garage-punk standards, the new album takes a full-bodied approach into darker, more anthemic new wave territory. Fortune’s ferocity is still in full force, only more focused through a lens of melodic, harmonious intensity that really shines in a live setting.
Both LP and CD versions of Discipline & Desire come with a fold-out lyric posters, according to Slumberland. If you go to the show on Saturday, be sure not to miss the opening sets from Chasms and The Mallard, both outstanding local bands on the rise.
