Home 72 hours, the 5 days in Austin seem like a blurry wet dream. For the live music obsessive there is no substitute. ALL of these featured artists will appear here in the next few weeks. Take advantage of this rock and roll circus. Here is a taste, if you dare…
Submitted for your approval: Guantanamo Baywatch! They played at least seven shows in Austin including this 1pm hangover show on Sunday at Beerland. Seductive, sludgy surf slop from Portland. They visit Berkeley this Sunday, 3/24, quite possibly my garage. Not to be missed.
Peelander-Z play DNA lounge Tuesday, 3/26. Played five shows including this family jamboree on Sunday at Springdale Farm. Japanese super heroes!
SF’s very own Mikal Cronin plays the Rickshaw Saturday, May 25th. This show at Barbarella featured Emily Epstein (of Ty Segall band) and Dylan (the blond, of The Mallard and The Spyrals)!
The Flaming Lips played their new unreleased album, The Terror, in it’s entirety at Auditorium Shores. Special guests included Jim James, a woman who liked to have her hair pulled, and a sleeping infant cradled in Wayne’s arms. The Lips play the Bottle Rock Festival in Napa on Friday, May 10th.
Speaking of special…THE SPECIALS played Stubb’s just a few hours later. They play The Warfield this Saturday, March 23rd. To hear “A Message to You Rudy” is worth the ticket price alone.
Thee Oh Sees blew minds out front of Beerland. They play the newly reopening Eagle Tavern!!! June 8th for Ty Segall’s bday potty! With Fuzz!
Voyager 8 played just one show at the fabulous Cheer Up Charlie’s. The band features members of Acid Baby Jesus and Hellshovel. These two bands play the Hemlock Tuesday, March 26th (with Gravy’s Drop and Primitive Hearts) and The Stork Club on Wednesday, March 27th (with Fuzz, Los Vigillantes y Las Ardillas all the way from Puerto Rico)! Hellshovel quickly became a favorite with our SXSW posse. Check out their strong-toed psychedelia at least once, and if you are bedridden, tune them in on the great KJFC radio on March 26th!
Nashville’s Useless Eaters played at least 12 shows this year. Here at the one and only Land of Beer. They play the Night Light tonight, Friday March 22nd and the Hemlock Thursday March 28th with Blasted Canyons. Their double record on one Burger cassette (C’est Bon/Daily Commute) plays endlessly in my car. Check ’em out yo!
Finally it is with great tears of joy that I can announce: Greg Ashley is NOT moving to Austin. Here he is with the John Brothers Piano Guys at Metal and Lace. Catch him at the Cafe Du Nord on Friday, April 12th.
