Sometimes I get these mind-cravings for surf rock. It’s been bothering me since I finished Thomas Pynchon‘s detective novel Inherent Vice — which takes place in the beach towns of LA and features a slew of acid-slurping surf rockers — a few weeks ago. But that’s Southern California in 1969. We’re talking Oakland, CA in 2013, a time when genres are very clearly bleeding together, so when I look for surf rock, I’m looking for something more. Which is what I think the Bay Area surf via punk/rock group Elektrick Sunset are going for with the release of their 3rd LP, Fish Dinner Party, out now on Last Stop Records.
Self described as a hybrid of The Kinks, The Minutemen, and Man or Astro-man?, Elektrik Sunset do what they can to put it all together. Give the new album a listen below, and decide for yourself if this is Hermosa Beach, Ocean Beach, or something somewhere in between.
