East Bay quartet Bells will perform a single release show with Yesway and Zakiya Harris at Brick and Mortar on January 10th. Bells has an unique local-meets-exotic sound combining elements of Afro-soul, heavy percussion, and experimental indie pop. East Bay Express said the band “draws from Oakland’s tradition of jazz and blues, speeds it up with Afropop beats, and breaks the flow with odd tempos and quick changes.” They will be releasing a new single “Video Star”, the first release from the band’s forthcoming debut album, due in Spring 2013.
Listen to three Bells demo tracks below (via Bandcamp).
Emily Ritz (DRMS and Honeycomb) and Kacey Johansing (Honeycomb) form the Oakland experimental folk-pop duo Yesway, and they will be releasing a single off their forthcoming debut called “Carried Away”. Stream last year’s Woahcean below )via Bandcamp).
Zakiya Harris, founder of the Bay Area’s Grind for the Green (the largest youth-led “green” social marketing and events organization in the nation) will also be performing. Watch her perform a tribute to Nina Simone at this year’s Live Is Living event:
