San Jose Rock Shop

This weekend, San Jose Rock Shop will open a new location (as well as a new venue) downtown.

The Rock Shop hopes the new venue will be a good fit for the downtown music scene, and a welcome addition San Jose’s notoriously small and ever-changing all-ages scene. “As far as all ages, there’s not a whole lot,” says store manager Jeff Ortega of the company’s decision to open their new 3rd Street shop. “We wanted something consistent (downtown).”

The new space, though it is at this time still very under construction, will feature their retail space up front, with a 200-capacity performance space in the back. To celebrate, they’ll be ringing in their new space with a full weekend of inaugural shows, running from October 19th-21st. They hope to keep set times short and let-out times early – shows will run from 7:00-8:45 p.m, a schedule that will ideally lure the bigger acts that play at the 21-plus venues on the weekend. “(The idea is that) they can do an early show here, then downtown,” says Ortega.

The new store will feature the same hard-to-find gear as their 5th St. location. “This is definitely not what we’re making our money on,” Ortega says of the venue. “It’s definitely been a labor of love.”

To be admitted into the club, you’ll need a membership, free through December. Apply here.
