Oakland’s Kacey Johansing will release her newest LP Grand Ghosts at a performance at Brick and Mortar September 28th. This forthcoming effort was recorded a bit differently than her previous release. “On my last album Many Seasons, I was doing so much learning, really exploring what it meant to be a recording artist and a band leader,” explains Johansing. “I was collaborating with many people back then and would pull in different musicians for different songs depending on who was around or what the feeling of the song was.”
For Grand Ghosts, she began recording almost two years ago with only her touring band, which is a collection of musicians that have played with dozens of other Bay Area projects, including DRMS, Huckle, and John Vanderslice‘s band. “I do know that I felt an urgency to track the album then because I wanted to capture the energy of the band that I had been playing live with. I wanted to have a nice family portrait, so to speak. They are all so busy and talented, I didn’t know (and still don’t know) for how long I’d have the honor of playing with them. We had bonded and had a dynamic that now feels quite irreplaceable.”

Johansing is releasing a few tracks from Grand Ghosts online, but for now, the complete LP will only be available at her album release show at Brick and Mortar on September 28th. Oakland’s Anna Ash, who released her most recent album in Japan on Tugboat Records, and Bay Area native (and current L.A. resident) Bart Davenport support.
