Oakland quartet Mr. Kind released their debut EP OK on July 23rd, making it available for download on Bandcamp mere months after originally joining forces. The band — comprised of Brian Bergeron (guitar/vocals), Jon Devoto (guitar/keys/vocals), Kyle Kelly-Yahner (drums), and Matt Roads (bass) — was first formed in March of this year at Bergeron’s behest in order to perform his solo material live, but then found themselves heading into the studio to record as a single unit, instead of continuing on as simply the Lowell, Massachusetts native and Northeastern University grad’s backing band.
What emerged was OK, which diverges quite a bit from Bergeron’s singer-songwriter material, featuring five tracks that range from driving indie rock that takes a cue from Devoto’s other band Bird by Bird (opener “You’re OK”) to rootsier material with a warmer 90s alternative feel (“Homeostasis” and “Take Care”). Mr. Kind is celebrating the release of OK with a show at Hotel Utah tonight, 7/27/12, with fellow Bay Area bands Buckeye Knoll and Anadel. Doug Streblow, who sings and plays guitar in Buckeye Knoll, put together a short trailer for the show that the bands circulated earlier this week:
Download a free seven-track preview of tonight’s show, as well as Bergeron’s most recent solo EP Hourglass (also free), and get full details on the gig after the jump.
