In recent years, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion kept busy releasing expanded reissues of their early material, but the pioneering blues-punk trio hadn’t put out a proper album of new music since 2004’s Damage. After playing together again in the wake of those reissues (which included such classic albums as Extra Width, Orange, and their 1997 live release Controversial Negro), the band plans to end their eight-year drought, announcing the release of a new full-length Meat And Bone on September 18th via BoomBox/Mom+Pop.

It seems that reuniting and going back over their 90s material rekindled something between Spencer and band mates Judah Bauer and Russell Simins. “We still have that psychic glue that allows us to create music together,” says Spencer. “Over the course of a year touring and writing new songs and recording, we rediscovered our shared history as a band. We circled the wagons, and went back to our roots. In a way this is almost like another first album.”

To go along with the news of the upcoming release of Meat And Bone, the band also made the album opener “Black Mold” available for free download, and announced a lengthy North American tour with a stop at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall (with a promise of more dates to follow). “Black Mold” is our first glimpse into the new album, which was recorded at the Key Club Recording Company studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and produced and mixed by Spencer himself, and it appears the group hasn’t skipped a beat. The track is dirty, rumbling, foot-stompin’ blues music—classic Blues Explosion.
