That pic right there is Slayer playing at Fun Fun Fun Fest last year. It was definitely one of my highlights of 2011. That’s downtown Austin you see in the background.

Wanna be there this November? Have I got an opportunity for you.

Enter the Guess the Fest contest — where all you have to do is guess what bands will be playing this year’s fest — and you could win a most-expenses-paid trip for you and a friend to the fest, which goes down November 2-4, 2012. It’s real easy to enter: You can login with your Facebook account, and you get 20 guesses. So bust out the ouija board, lucky rabbit’s foot, or magic 8 ball and head to GuessTheFest.com to enter. And may the Fest be with you.

Here’s the official recap video from last year to give you another taste of what you’re in store for if you’re the lucky winner:

What I like most about Fun Fun Fun Fest is that it’s not specific. It’s not genre-specific, it’s not era-specific, etc. They always book new and underground bands, plus some favorites from yesteryear, and the bands run the gamut from indie and hip hop to folk, comedy, punk, metal, and the unclassifiable. You’ve got bands like Cannibal Corpse and Russian Circles playing one stage, Flying Lotus and Odd Future on another, and main-stage performers including M83, Passion Pit, Lykke Li, and Slayer rounding things out. There’s even a comedy tent and wrestling. Something for everyone!

Here’s an anecdote to illustrate how badass this is: Last year, Danzig played and I was super stoked. Then he pulled a primadonna act, came on 45 minutes late, and sounded like total shit. I was disappointed, but not too mad. I just moseyed down the way and watched Public Enemy instead, who totally killed it. With a lineup this deep, even Glenn Danzig’s sense of self-entitlement can’t spoil things.

Oh and you can count on the Bay Area representing, too. Last year, Girls and Thee Oh Sees made the trek.

There will be clues offered up on GuessTheFest.com later this month, and the contest ends July 1, when the official lineup announcement happens. So get to guessing, and maybe I’ll see you in Austin.
