Since being discovered by Blackalicious in 2005, Brazilian musician Curumin (Luciano Nakata Albuquerque) has matured into an important artist for the South American music movement here in the States. On June 5th he released his third album, Arrocha, and has announced June tour dates in support. San Francisco gets a stop on the route – June 23rd, 2012 at Slim’s with special guest Tommy Guerrero.
Guerrero is a San Francisco skateboarding legend who segued naturally into music later in life, having released a number of albums and EP’s to wide critical acclaim (including a #2 spot on Rolling Stone’s “best of” list in 2003 for Soul Food Taqueria). His music incorporates sounds from spectrums covering Latin, jazz, soul, funk and more. 2011’s Lifeboats & Follies is arguably one of the most under-the-radar albums of last year, and makes this rare live appearance for Guerrero a fine anticipatory event. Listen to “The Last Maverick” off Follies below.
