For those of you whose musical tastes have varied as much as any phase of life, chances are Medeski Martin & Wood made it through your ears at some point. The experimental, free-form jazz scientists have been playing for years together while also allowing time for healthy solo exploration. Enter MMW’s exceptional drummer Billy Martin and his current collaboration with Bay Area Hammond B3 master Wil Blades.

Together they are, appropriately, the Billy Martin & Wil Blades Duo and first jammed together at SF’s Boom Boom Room in January 2011. The impromptu session led to another appearance together that year at New Orleans’ annual JazzFest celebration, before the two landed in Berkeley and recorded their first album together, Shimmy.

The Duo is back in San Francisco tomorrow night, 6/1/12 at Great American Music Hall, along with California funk band On The Spot Trio, and we’ve got a pair of tix with your name on them. If you’re our lucky winner, of course. Shoot an email to contest@thebaybridged.com and we’ll be in touch soon. Check out a clip from the Duo’s gig last December up in Arcata.
