Ms. Freedia Ross, who goes by Big Freedia in the Big Easy’s sissy bounce scene, is genetically a male with a flamboyant style who commands feminine pronouns, which shouldn’t even be all that remarkable except that in 2012 hip hop is still largely a misogynistic boys’ club; the fact that she is trail-blazing through the Deep South, no less, is nothing short of kick-ass. She’s been performing to packed venues since 2011, including a Public Works show last year.

In February, when Noise Pop announced that the gender-bending bounce queen needed to cancel her show at Public Works due to a medical emergency, Hard French stepped in and threw a Big Queer Noise Pop Dance Party and Noise Pop promised to re-schedule. They have made good on that promise — Big Freedia will be returning to Public Works on June 14 and since the Hard French crew is co-presenting, the show will double as a vintage soul pre-Pride warm-up (should be interesting to see how booty clapping works its way into a soul party.)
