Is that rain so often falling from the Seattle sky, or is it tears? It seems that it’s been sad times for Mike Hadreas, the man behind Perfume Genius who fortunately has a knack for channeling his pain into heartrending piano ballads rather than falling apart. The excellent new record, Put Your Back N 2 It, is only slightly less devastating than his 2010 debut, Learning, and that’s probably only due to the lush orchestration of the sophomore effort that contrasts so starkly with the bleak arrangements of the first. Both feature the same lovelorn lyrics and fragile, haunting vocals that match his face.
But the weeping won’t last the whole night. All this sadness will be preceded by the experimental pop of Portland’s Parenthetical Girls. Formerly known as The Swastika Girls, the band is in the midst of releasing a new full-length called Privilege as a box set of five uber-limited 12-inch EPs on their own Slender Means Society label. According to their website, they are on the fourth installment. Also according to their website, each copy is “hand-numbered in the blood of Parenthetical Girl Amber Smith.”
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here.
