Why didn’t anyone tell me that SF had an all female Kinks cover band?! Well actually the bass player is a dude, but regardless the Minks stole the show. The pregnant singer loves her some Kinks and it comes through in her inspired vocals. The guitarist reminds me of the late, great Lydia Mendoza with a laid back intensity and some seriously funky guitar work. Minks covered the Kinks katalog from 1964’s “Stop Your Sobbing” to 1983’s “Come Dancing”, but more importantly they picked some shiny gems from along the way. “Picture Book” (from the amazing The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society) stood out. There was also a fantastic shout along to “Dead End Street”. Unfortunately they overlooked my favorite Kinks record, Muswell Hillbillies, despite our screams of protest. For the upcoming show at the Red Devil Lounge on Friday Nov 25 (mid turkey weekend) I’d love to see a cover of “Alcohol”, fuck I’d accept anything off that masterpiece. The singer should be quite pregnant by then! Be there.

The eve had begun with a David Bowie tribute band, SF’s Jean Genies. And as dedicated as they were, they needed a tad more amphetamine to pull this off. They did gain some speed along the way and, by the finale, “Moonage Daydream” kicked ass.

Jean Genies

In the middle slot, Total B.S, straight outta Oakland. A Bob Seger tribute band, they rocked and are full of talent, but I hate Bob Seger. And no more Billy Joel P-L-E-A-S-E! I had to hightail it to Nick’s for an actual cocktail. Nice anejo! If ya dig Bob Seger, check these guys out.
