tUnE-YarDs‘ w h o k i l l is one of the most interesting albums out so far this year, so much so that it has attracted the attention of folks like The New Yorker, a publication that many love and respect, but might not necessarily think of as a tastemaker in the independent music scene. In May, the magazine ran a one-page profile of Merrill Garbus, which is where I learned many key facts, including how Garbus lived in Kenya while she was in college. That helps explain where she learned how to contribute more to her songwriting with her voice: above melody, it is also yet another form of rhythm.
That rhythmic construction is the beautiful thing behind many tUnE-YarDs songs, including “Gangsta,” and Yours Truly captures it in the video above. The performance took place at New, Improved Recording, owned by Eli Crews, who’s also been doing sound on tour for tUnE-YarDs this year.
