Not but a few days ago, in beginning the process of preparing some end-of-2010 recap materials, I was remarking to another Bay Bridger that for all of the great music coming out of the Bay Area right now, it feels like we’re in something of a drought on the straight-up indie rock front. Don’t get me wrong, the Bay’s got plenty of creative folks engaging in synthy experimentations, folk weirdness, and raw garage rock, but where is the meat-and-potatoes Pavement/Spoon-style indie rock and roll?
As if to answer that question, Jake Mann & The Upper Hand recently sent us “Days Are Long,” a brand new song from the band’s upcoming album Parallel South, out January 18th on Crossbill Records. The track is a seriously addictive slice of immediate power pop-rock, the sort of song that’s over before you know it. If you’re like me, you’ll be setting this one on repeat.
Jake and the band also recently shot a video for “Days Are Long” with Terroreyes.tv, which you can see below. The Parallel South record release show is at Bottom of the Hill on January 23rd (8:30pm, $8, 21+), with Grand Lake and il gato.
After the jump, hear another exclusive bonus track, a remix of “Days Are Long” by Parallel South producer Max Hart. If the original cruises at a breakneck pace, the remix is a more pensive reworking, slowing things down and reworking the instrumentation while preserving much of the original’s melodic core. Also below, Jake and the band’s upcoming January 2011 tour dates.
