The Definite Articles is a band of appreciable size and aspiration; they spent three years putting together King Merriweather, which they will perform in its entirety tonight and tomorrow at the found venue of a Presbyterian church (32 Ocean at Mission). Each night includes a different Sacramento-based folk rock supporting act — understandable, for the headliners transplanted from that area down to the Bay Area just a few years ago. Friday’s will be DoomBIRD and Saturday’s is Sea of Bees. And if you show up Saturday, you’ll be surprised with a guest performance (my lips are sealed).
The Definite Articles – “Bumbershoot”
The Bay Area-based orchestral rock band recorded the album this past summer at Tiny Telephone, with the help of many more musicians to fill out the compositions. Some of those musicians will join the performances this weekend, bulking up the band to a 14-piece. About the record:
…instrumentation recorded during the session ultimately comprised 30 musicians, including woodwinds, horns, harp, choir, and a dozen strings. On King Merriweather, the group constructs a swirling, bittersweet tale of love, choice, and regret. Some songs swell to an epic size, others remain small and restrained; all reinforce a set of underlying themes that take multiple listens to fully uncover.
More details about the pair of shows in the Facebook event, and tickets are still available to purchase online.
Fun fact: the King Merriweather show poster, available at both shows, was created by Oakland artist Matt Fleming, who also made The Bay Bridged a fantastic banner in 2009.
