Every Monday, we’ll be offering you some early picks for the week’s best concerts with an emphasis on Bay Area-based bands. Do you think we omitted something worthwhile? Let us know in the comments! Also, we’ve launched a new Local Concert Calendar, which you should be sure to check out for an expanded set of daily listings. Bands/promoters/managers, feel free to submit your own shows to the Calendar too.

Free shows dominate the week’s offerings
Three free highlights to a busy week of shows. Wednesday’s Rumble party at Milk features a psych and garage rock lineup capped by SF’s Burnt Ones. Over at 111 Minna that same night, there’s a monthly party called The Neighborhood, featuring a diverse lineup of local acts, including multi-talented MC/producer Trackademicks and indie bands My First Earthquake, Electric Sunset, and Maus Haus. Speaking of Maus Haus, who again impressed at their recent Treasure Island opening gig, they’ll be at The Uptown on Friday, 11/5, for a free First Friday show. Also playing: Birds & Batteries, James & Evander and Sleeptalks.

Thee Oh Sees 9/29/10

Congratulations to The Uptown!
Speaking of The Uptown, congrats are in order to the venue as it celebrates its third anniversary on Saturday, 11/6. In these times of economic death spiral (prove me wrong, America), it’s encouraging to see a new venue survive, especially when it’s committed to booking local bands. To that end, Saturday’s celebration features several quality merrymakers in Thee Oh Sees, Bare Wires, and Mister Loveless.

Not local but too good to omit
Okay, there are no local bands playing at The Independent on Friday, but the lineup is simply too good to pass up. It’s hopefully not a slight to Bear in Heaven to deem the headliner the least exciting band on the bill, if only because the supporting acts are less familiar to these parts. Lower Dens have an Unrestian way of drawing anthems from downbeat, vulnerable noise-pop. Openers Sun Airway just released their debut album on Dead Oceans, serving up a buzzed-about take on wandering, atmospheric art-pop.

Burnt Ones – “Gonna Listen To T.Rex (All Night Long)”
Maus Haus – “Winter”
Thee Oh Sees – “Warm Slime”
Bare Wires – “Dancing on a Dime”
Lower Dens – “Hospice Gates”
Sun Airway – “Oh, Naoko”
