Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp comprise SF’s Exray’s, who made their big screen soundtrack debut recently with the song “Hesitation” included in The Social Network. The song’s going to be on Exray’s first full length, coming out in 2011, but the band’s first tape/digital EP, Ammunition Teeth, comes out on Howells Transmitter on Tuesday.
There’s a wonderful unpredictability about Ammunition Teeth‘s electronic art-pop. Listening to it, one gets the sense that each song could go in any number of directions, and the band’s collage approach means that any sort of instrument or manipulated found sound could show up at any time. Of course, that’s not to say that the songs feel arbitrary. “Everything Goes,” first featured on the In A Cloud comp earlier in 2010, is about as catchy a song as I’ve heard all year. The rest of the tape similarly transforms vintage synth sounds and gritty drum samples into catchy, experimental pop music. Check out another song from the tape, “Ways To Stop Time,” below:
The Ammunition Teeth EP Release Show is at the Distillery (223 Mississippi, San Francisco) on October 30th (8pm). After that, Exray’s will be kicking off the Terrorbird Holiday Extravaganza at Bottom of the Hill on December 4th (8:30pm, $10), with Brent Amaker and the Rodeo and some additional to-be-announced acts.
