DIY doesn’t get much better than this. Camp Out is a fairly new addition to the Bay Area indie scene, comprised of Maddy Hanks and Jackie Law as both musicians and proficient multi-taskers. Camp Out’s debut album is entitled Closer, and is out now via Swordfish Records, the band’s own label that they run with fellow local musician and record co-producer, Shaw.
The music within Closer is everything you already know and enjoy from the best sources of female-led indie pop – Tegan and Sara, the Cardigans, Mates of State, Metric – without compromising originality or pigeonholing the band into the somewhat problematic category of “girl rock.” Instead, the light-hearted themes mix with comprehensive structure and effervescent distortion, creating an overall infectious and multi-layered debut.
Camp Out are scheduled to play at Kimo’s this Wednesday, March 31st (9:00 pm, cost TBA), as well as the Stud on April 15th and Modern Times Bookstore on April 23rd.
