The Fresh & Onlys – “Vanishing Cream [Plastic Spoons]” via Pitchfork

Tonight, the extremely busy Fresh & Onlys join local genre-mates Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall and The Baths at our favorite Outer Mission haunt, El Rio (8pm, $5). It’s a last hurrah for the band before a long cross-country journey with King Khan & the Shrines.

The August In My Mind EP marks the seventh release from the F&Os in under two years. What’s interesting about the EP is that Tim Cohen had to take some alternate writing measures because of an arm injury; as a result, though, he and the band harvested some pretty ripe new tunes. The playful structure of “Diamond in the Dark” leads with drawn out remorse before shifting to the band’s familiar and infectious garage gallop.

The King Khan/Fresh & Onlys tour finishes at home April 15 at Bimbo’s, but the fun doesn’t end there. A full length record produced by Tim Green on In The Red should surface later this year.
