This is part 2 of 3 in a Mission Mission Best of 2009 series on The Bay Bridged.

I didn’t want to pick Girls as my favorite band of 2009, because I knew everybody’d be picking Girls, but I had to pick Girls, because there is no better band of 2009 than Girls. With music that sounds like Elvis Costello fronting Nirvana covering the Beach Boys, the lyrics fall between embarrassingly honest and obnoxiously obscure so perfectly that what comes out is just exactly what’s going on. “I was feeling so sad and alone, then I found a friend in the song that I’m singing” isn’t corny, it’s true, and “I’m sick and tired of the way that I feel” isn’t boring, it’s relatable. Album came out this year and everybody noticed, especially in San Francisco. Girls sounds exactly like San Francisco on it’s most depressing but still lovely and inspiring day and everyone should listen. Quit being a buzzkill, okay?
