Show up early and you’ll be rewarded — with $2 PBRs between 6 and 9pm. This Friday, The Uptown in Oakland is throwing “First Friday” with live music from Wallpaper, Battlehooch, Somehow At Sea (Oakland) and Suicidal Barfly (San Jose), with no cover.
The trusting theme of the evening is fun. Take Battlehooch as an example — saxy, squealy, fast-paced and outrageously costumed, this pop-electro-who knows what else outfit from the city is infamous for their entertaining ability. The night delves into some rock acts, such as San Jose’s Suicidal Barfly, but mostly sticks true to the electro side of indie pop. Somehow at Sea attests to this just as much as Wallpaper; both are danceable to say the least, and possess those awkwardly awesome hip-hop moments. Try to tell me this Somehow at Sea video isn’t hilarious in an “ode to the 80s” sort of way:
