This week’s podcast features Vetiver, a folk-rock band led by San Francisco’s Andy Cabic and one that likely needs little introduction to Bay Area indie music fans. After moving from North Carolina to SF following the dissolution of his band The Raymond Brake, Cabic found himself immersed in a community of forward-thinking musicians, eventually co-founding the band Tussle and creating a demo of solo recordings that found its way to Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, The Lilys). Over four acclaimed albums, Cabic and Monahan have developed a folk-rock sound balancing relatively understated melodies with gorgeous layered production. Cabic’s musical influences, some of whom he covered on 2008’s A Thing of the Past, are numerous and diverse, and critics have praised the band’s ability to transform well-worn classic folk and rock sounds into something both familiar and modern.

In February, Vetiver released its most prominent album to date, Tight Knit, on Sub Pop Records. As we’ve written at length elsewhere, the album manages to be both exciting and restrained, expanding the Vetiver sound into songs with strong pop and boogie leanings while delivering plenty of the layered folk-rock fans have come to expect and enjoy. Imminently listenable, it’s another strong addition to the band’s body of work that they’re supporting with a series of US and international tours. If you can see them live, we highly recommend you check them out.

We sat down with Andy Cabic in our studio last week, discussing how San Francisco living facilitates his songwriting, the process behind writing and recording the new album, and his longstanding relationship with collaborator Thom Monahan. The episode also features four songs from Vetiver.
