The Blacks
Although we normally only cover shows from the Bay Area, I just got word of a series of events being held in New York by the bi-coastal band, The Blacks (Feature Podcast). The last time I saw The Blacks was at their performance at The Bay Area Takeover down in Austin where tambourinist, JDK Black, ended up destroying his tambourine while partaking in some excellent dance moves on stage (Ed: see photo). Said tambourine, now in two parts, was then thrown both into the crowd and out the window onto the street (Ed: no one was hurt) — to which somehow, both halves ended up in my backpack at the end of the day (Ed: I have a feeling one of our photogs drunkenly reunited the tambourine halves in my bag).

Well it turns out that The Blacks are performing a three night garage rock residency over at Pianos in New York City next weekend called The Tambourine Experiment: one band, one hundred tambourines, one mess of a dance pit. From the band:

Each night we’ll be arming the audience with a boatload of tambourines and the shows will be recorded live over the course of three days. Think performance art for the garage rock set, in which we redeem the tambourine from its wimp-tastic reputation once and for all.

So if you’re lucky enough to be in New York you can partake in the experiments on the following dates:

Saturday 5/10 :: Pianos NYC
Sunday 5/11 :: Pianos NYC
Monday 5/12 :: Pianos NYC
Wednesday 5/14 :: Union Pool Brooklyn NYC w/ The Heavy (UK)

For the rest of us, we’ll hopefully be posting photos or video from this event on the site! You can also catch them for a few dates on the west coast at the end of the month:

Friday 5/23 :: Bottom of the HIll SF
Saturday 5/24 :: Blue Lamp Sacramento
Sunday 5/25 :: Crux Arts Chico
