The album takes the next step for a band that has suffered some inevitable comparisons to other indie pop and shoegaze bands. This album features bright, doubled melodies and harmonies atop the catchy guitar base.
The solid drums create much of the poppy fun, which somehow compliments the almost dark lyrics (“Show yourselves / we know who you are / made from garbage of stars / all of the needles and shards / of a thousand hearts breaking”). The slow tunes are as good as the upbeat ones, and the album ebbs and flows and never stays too long in one place.
You can get Love is Chemicals’ new album from CD Baby. These songs will definitely make for an action-packed live show, and with HIJK and The Dont’s opening, Friday will be a fantastic showcase of local talent, presented by BAGeL Radio. The show is at Bottom of the Hill. 9:30pm, $10.
