Embarrassingly enough, I had yet to see the Herms live before Wednesday night’s show at Rickshaw stop. Always a fitting headliner for any local showcase, The Herms have been one of the most consistent local acts in recent memory. Following the release of Record Machine early last year, frontman Matt Lutz took the time to record a solo record, playing those new songs with a band dubbed the Animal Husbandry.
If Wednesday’s show was any indication, that solo material seemed to have some influence of Lutz’s main project, with three of those songs (“Willie,” “Seesaw,” “Dreamin’ Van Zandt”) making their way into the set. Of course Record Machine was well represented with rollicking renditions of the title track, “$ Shot,” and “Volleyball” – among others. The set finished with a new song – “Out of Hand” – which you can hear at the band’s MySpace. Despite comparisons they may have received the past couple of years, it would appear that both Lutz’s and the Herms’ sound is continuing to evolve.
