Back from a tour of Australia and New Zealand, Edith Frost headlines a night of country-rock Tuesday at Cafe du Nord. Frost, who records on the Drag City label, moved to the Bay Area from Chicago last year. Joining Frost is Spider, the folk project of Brooklyn, NY singer songwriter Jane Herships, whose 2006 album The Way to Bitter Lake caused Aquarius Records to remark that “Marissa Nadler and Joanna Newsom better watch their backs.” Also playing are Willard Grant Conspiracy and Coal Beautiere from Nevada City.
At the Rockit Room, it’s a “Piano Showcase”, featuring performances by a diverse musical lineup. Particularly of note are the melancholy pop of El Olio Wolof, the Waits-esque songwriting of Jesse DeNatale, and the intense instrumental rock of Parker Street Cinema. We discussed the latest on Parker Street Cinema here last week. Also playing are Hardy Harr! and Ted Brinkley’s Floridians.
And at the Hemlock Tavern, Daevid Allen performs sets with local experimentalists Josh Pollock and Kwisp. An original member of The Soft Machine and founder of Gong, Allen is recognized as a psychedelic and experimental rock pioneer.
