Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297)

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area -- and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" -- but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album during a two-month stay [...]

Raleigh Moncrief – "Beyond The Neon Lights"

Electro super producer Raleigh Moncrief is in the studio again and on the verge of releasing a new EP on Anticon Records. In the meantime, the producer, who's worked with big name Dirty Projectors, released a track featuring one of their ex members. "Beyond the Neon Lights" (see below), features singer Zac Nelson and former Dirty Projectors' contributor Angel Deradoorian. You'll find this track somewhere between chillwave and intense electronica. Soothing yet fast paced, it's hard to turn you ear away from its entrancing beats and stimulating vocals. I'm not sure if San Francisco can stake its claim on this [...]

Davis music festival Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom returns for twelfth installment

As a UC Davis alumnus, I'm always proud to promote the vibrant underground music scene in Davis, CA. Run primarily by the local college radio station KDVS 90.3FM, the city lights up every week with house shows by bands playing diverse versions of strange, noisy, alt-everything. Often very few of the students present have even heard the band — but it's still worth it to go to the show, grab a 40 oz of Miller Lite and join the ear-splitting, sweaty, living room mosh pit and then waltz outside and have a cigarette with your friends. What San Franciscans gain [...]

Sacramento Electronic Music Festival books Raleigh Moncrief, Giraffage, James & Evander, Yalls

Still flying mostly under-the-radar, the 2012 Sacramento Electronic Music Festival will feature a healthy showing of the Bay Area's best electronic musicians including Raleigh Moncrief, San Francisco producer and multi-instrumentalist Giraffage, the electro-pop of James & Evander, and Oakland-based producer Yalls. Sounds like a pretty good excuse to get out of the city and enjoy some of that beautiful, hot Sacramento spring weather. The festival takes place May 3, 4, and 5 at Harlow's and Momo Lounge and is 21+. Tickets are available at Harlows.com. While the full lineup has yet to be confirmed, keep checking the event's Facebook page [...]

Raleigh Moncrief's new video for “Don’t Shoot”

Sacramento-based recording artist Raleigh Moncrief has gotten some buzz these days, for engineering and co-producing Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca and supplying backing axe for Marnie Stern -- and, of course, his own playful and well-received solo efforts. The video below, directed by Miko Riverza, is “Don’t Shoot”, the latest from Moncrief’s Watered Lawn LP released last October on Anticon. Watered Lawn is anything but watered down. The tracks are layered, lush, and expansive with folksy art-rock vocals atop a beats-and-loops-based collage of sounds, both live instrumental and digital. It’s the perfect soundtrack to anyone’s 80s movie and video game-inspired dreams. [...]
