Mixtape: The Lush Sounds of Bay Area Dream Pop

Download: Mixtape: The Lush Sounds of Bay Area Dream Pop (Podcast #434) This episode first ran on KQED.org. Whether they call themselves post-punk, psych or indie pop, a wide array of Bay Area musicians cultivate lush atmospheres and textural depth in songs that are as sonically detailed as they are catchy. The Bay Area's "dream pop" standouts--eleven of whom are featured in this mixtape--include a number of promising new bands, like Topographies, a quartet whose stellar debut single is an exciting burst of fuzzed-out, propulsive rock. Other highlights include Tanukichan, the project of Oakland's Hannah Van Loon, whose layered music [...]

Days at the beach, barbecues, road trips, street fairs and festivals: sure, you might need to carry a light sweater on some of your summer excursions, but the long days can't be beat for outdoor fun. With the solstice kicking off summer earlier this week, we've compiled this mixtape of songs for the season, collecting new and recent releases by San Francisco Bay Area bands that [...]

Fine Points release first single off debut album

I wish there was a way to translate the beginning of this song into written English – to literally spell out the way the guitar saunters front and center – because it's a lovely way to start a song, and could be a lovely way to start a paragraph. “Astral Season” is the first single from Fine Points' debut album Hover, out July 17 via Dine Alone Records. It was recorded at New Telos, a church turned recording studio studio in Oakland. The bay area duo, Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss, are former members of Sleepy Sun. What introduces itself [...]

Kevin Morby (Woods, The Babies) playing free solo show in SF

Fans of Kevin Morby, rejoice! Morby will be playing a FREE show at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall on February 4th as part of Wood Shoppe's astoundingly FREE monthly shows. Rounding out the lineup is L.A.'s psych-popper Avid Dancer, Fine Points (side project of Sleepy Sun) and a DJ set by Zachary Carl-Os of Wood Shoppe. Did I mention it's free? As a Brooklynite, Morby started out playing bass for Woods and then formed The Babies, who I've always found more redeeming for the perfect musical partnership with Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls. And then, proving he's not one [...]
