Oakland’s Day Wave releases new single “Potions” off upcoming EP

Day Wave (photo: Jessica Perez) In preparation of the upcoming release of his EP Crush, Oakland shoegaze project Day Wave released the second single titled "Potions." The song "is about being drawn towards the wrong things in life. It can be hard to understand why we go towards toxic things or people, with this song I was just trying to make sense of it for myself" says Jackson Phillips. Crush comes after a quiet few years in which Day Wave performed and recorded with Pete Yorn and Jai Wolf. Fittingly, the debut of the EP came earlier this year with a song aptly titled [...]

Favorite Haunts: Hazel English on Beauty’s Bagel Shop, East Bay comforts

Hazel English (Illustration: Rob Goodman) I first saw Hazel English when she performed a stripped-down set this past spring opening up for Thao Nguyen at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma. I hadn’t heard her records yet, so I got to know her music right there, live in the moment, one hauntingly raw melody at a time. I was so moved by her performance that when her new album, a double EP amalgam Just Give In/Never Going Home, was released on Polyvinyl earlier this year, I dove into her studio work full force. The album, produced by friend and collaborator Jackson [...]

Photos + Review: Green Day breathe life into Night 2 of Not So Silent Night

Green Day (photo: SarahJayn Kemp) The final night of Live 105’s Not So Silent Night was a packed event with supporting acts Day Wave, K. Flay, Phantogram, The Head and the Heart, and Bastille priming the audience for headlining band, Green Day. Though all opening bands played enthusiastic sets in which they managed to sound just as good as their albums, local boys Day Wave were the only real reminder as to why live music is everything. They didn’t sound like a recording — they sounded alive. Moody and melodramatic, their sound hearkens back to an era before autotune and family-band [...]

Day Wave joins Harvest Records, releases new song

(photo: Pooneh Ghana) Oakland’s own shoegaze-infected surf rockers, Day Wave have signed with Harvest Records —the label owned by Capitol Music Group and home to TV On The Radio, Best Coast, Glass Animals, and Death Grips. The band, which is the project of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jackson Philips, made their announcement this month alongside the release of a brand new track entitled “Wasting Time.” At Rickshaw Stop earlier this year, Jackson introduced the song as the hypnotic refrain and atmospheric soundscape instantly captivated the room. “Wasting Time” is also the kind of dreamy banger that could have easily found a [...]

Review + Photos: Day Wave kicks off a new tour at the Independent

Day Wave (photo: Jessica Perez) Review by Jessica Perez Bay Area local artist Day Wave played their first-ever headlining set at the Independent last night on April 25. Jackson Phillips of Day Wave has sure come a long way from playing his 5th show ever back in August of 2015 when he opened for Twin Peaks to where he is now. He just came off of a two-month tour over seas and more recently just got back from playing shows in Australia. It's amazing to see his progression as an artist from the Headcase EP to his latest Hard to Road [...]

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/SXSW_2016_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Highlights from South by Southwest 2016 (Podcast #382) Every March, thousands of aspiring bands flock to Austin, Texas for South by Southwest Music, a week-long event functioning as part conference, part music festival, and an all-around great opportunity to sample some of the world's best acts. The sheer number of options blanketing the Texas capital during the festival can be overwhelming, but it remains one of the premier places to discover new and emerging bands. That's the view from a music fan's perspective, mind you. For a musician, the degree to which South by Southwest performances might [...]

Best of 2015: Paul Chalker of the SF Critic on Day Wave

If you're in music, especially live music, living in the city of San Francisco can be a humongous fucking distraction. Since I moved here about 4 years ago I've probably averaged at least one show a week. There’s just too much music, so many awesome venues, so many great bands . . . and a lot of these acts are national, meaning local bands often fall by the wayside. Seeing a local band usually means a few things; either you're friends with someone in the band, you accidentally stumbled upon them on a random night or they've been around for [...]

Video Premiere: Watch Day Wave perform poolside at Phoenix Hotel

Back in early August, Oakland's Day Wave — the solo project of Jackson Phillips — performed the lo-fi surf pop song "Drag" from his debut EP Headcase alongside the pool at the Phoenix Hotel in downtown San Francisco. It all went down as part of Joie de Vivre's Good Measure Tour (co-presented by SF's Boing Boing and Noise Pop), which features artists playing at their hotels around the country. Check out the Day Wave video premiere below for real evidence that the secret performance happened, possibly right outside your hotel room (and you missed it? For shame!). Rectify your mistake below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjdSQ4y67eo [...]
