Couches "leak" debut 7-inch

20 Sided Records and its founder David Mitchell are keeping busy these days. The label is gearing up for the release of Cannons and Clouds' new EP A Challenge To The Dark, will follow that release with a celebratory gig at The Chapel on July 25, is releasing its fourth compilation These Strange Days in August, and will celebrate that release with four consecutive nights of shows at four separate venues in early September. On top of all that, Mitchell's own band Couches is priming to release its debut 7-inch "California" b/w "Killer Mutant Butterfly" on September via (of course) [...]

The Bay Bridged Presents: The 8th Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest on July 4th

Whether your idea of a quality Independence Day is running amok with sparklers and M-80s around the Mission, or watching the bigtime show from Bernal Hill -- you can do all of these things and still make it over to El Rio for our 8th annual party, Big Time Freedom Fest. Nacent SF trio Couches are setting out on their "Real Lazy Tour" of the West Coast during May, and it all starts tonight at Amnesia with a set sandwiched between headliner Brasil and opener Old & Gray. Frontman David Mitchell (whom you may recognize as the founder of 20 Sided Records) describes the band's sound as "slacker indie rock," which he explains is "original indie rock, like Pavement, Built to Spill, Archers of Loaf, Sonic Youth, etc." The three-piece is planning to release an EP in September as a preview for their debut full length, which should be out early [...]

Oceanography playing The Night Light this Friday, 4/26/13

Oakland's Oceanography, the recording project of East Bay Express Art Director Brian Kelly, is headlining a gig at The Night Light in Oakland this Friday, April 26, with support from Couches, Mosshead, and The There There. Kelly, whose track "Reggie Jackson" ranked high on my list of favorites from last year, hasn't dropped any new material since the 2012 release of his brilliant sophomore EP Parachutes of Plenty, but he has been playing a steady diet of shows in both the Bay and down in the City of Angels. The frontman tells me, "This show will be unique because I'm [...]
