Rogue Wave’s “Aesop Rock” is a solid return

After a two-year hiatus, Oakland’s Rogue Wave released their new single “Aesop Rock,” a pleasing response to rapper Aesop Rock’s single “Rogue Wave” released in January. The catchy indie pop-rock tune has great guitar leads paired with bubbly synths and percussive motion that charges the song forward and begs a little repeat. For the release of the single, the band teamed up with San Francisco's The Tipping Point, a nonprofit that works to break the cycle of poverty in the Bay Area. It’s an important organization working to help community members get the resources they need when their needs are not being [...]

#TBT: Watch Aesop Rock and Religious Girls perform at Phono del Sol in 2011

In honor of #TBT, we're throwing it all way the back to 2011 when Phono del Sol was a brand new festival with six bands on the bill: Aesop Rock Mirah Man/Miracle Magik*Magik Orchestra Religious Girls Appetite While the festival has grown significantly over the last five years — we're now looking at 10 food trucks instead of one, 11 bands instead of six, and two beer gardens versus zero — we think the videos below capture the original D.I.Y. energy and focus that led to the creation of Phono del Sol in 2011 as the brainchild of The Bay Bridged [...]

Editors’ Picks: What We’ve Been Listening to This Week (Blank Range, Aesop Rock, White Fence)

Blank Range Russell: I LOVE when a song forces you to stop whatever you're doing and just listen when you hear it for the first time. Such was the case when I was folding laundry the other night and heard "Last Crash Landing" from Nashville's Blank Range. I love everything about it - the huge drums that almost sound sampled, the muddy guitar, the organ, the vocals - everything. I'm adding Blank Range to the growing list of Nashville acts I need to see when they're in town, and you probably should, too. Phase II by Blank Range Anna: I [...]

After appearing on each other's recent albums, Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson are going to be releasing a full-length collaboration as The Uncluded. The duo released a Record Store day single earlier this year (which you can listen to after the jump), and just served up "That Cat Has Worms" as a free-for-your-email download. No details yet on when the new album (title currently unknown) will be released.

Aesop Rock: new LP 'Skelethon' and SF shows

It would seem that Aesop Rock is done with his first album in five years, and now he's just making us wait...until he releases Skelethon next week and subsequently drops by The Filmore and Amoeba SF to perform the new material in his home away from home. Back in April, the San Francisco transplant and hip-hop visionary started dropping hints about his forthcoming LP, Skelethon, the first since 2007's None Shall Pass. It began a series of (at least) three clips where Aesop, AKA Ian Bavitz, engages in some tomfoolery with a decomposing cat, meets the Grim Reaper and shows us a somewhat coarsely made [...]

We've got seven great bands lined up -- The Fresh & Onlys, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Gardens & Villa, Dominant Legs, [...]

In case you're not tempted to listen to "Superhand's Mantra (Fuck Us All)," consider that Busdriver told Self-Titled: “I asked Aesop Rock to join me in a spiraling death plunge into rap’s blackened heart and he happily agreed... Unlike any of the songs on Beaus$Eros, this song abandons all good taste." For the record, Beaus$Eros has a track called [...]
