Giveaway and interview: A-1 on his hometown show

San Francisco's Adam Traore, better known as A-1, has been hard at work over the past few years, gradually growing a following backed by a steady stream of new releases and fantastic videos, culminating with the recent release of his album Thurlian and a national tour with fellow San Francisco rapper Watsky. This Friday night, he's got a hometown show at The Chapel, being joined by a fine slate of all-local artists. We've got a pair of tickets up for grabs for the show, along with a conversation we had with Adam about his hometown show, touring with Watsky, and [...]

Video: A-1 – “Good People”

Mission rapper A-1 is set to release his latest album, Thurlian, and he just dropped a fantastic video for the second track he's shared off the album, "Good People". Beautifully shot from the streets of San Francisco, the visuals are an absolutely brilliant portrait of The City. A-1 has always meshed well with dreamy electronica beats, and on "Good People", Bear//Face's "Taste my Sad" provides a sound that's right in his wheelhouse. A-1 raps his heart out on the track about everything from good weed to people who can't afford quality health care, making it clear that he's continuing to [...]

Video: A-1 – "Summertime Sadness"

Last week, Stereogum premiered A-1's video for his Ryan Hemsworth-produced "Summertime Sadness". Set in a San Francisco Victorian, the scene appears to be, well, a little hotter than your typical San Francisco summer day, but director David Dutton somehow made shadows bleed, so we should probably let the unseasonable warmth slide. Watch the "Summertime Sadness" video below, and look for new A-1 releases in early 2014.

September 2 is Hiero Day in Oakland

Oakland's legendary Hieroglyphics Crew is throwing a massive, free, and all ages hip-hop festival on Labor Day known as Hiero Day, taking place at Linden Street Brewery in Oakland. The festival began last year when a Facebook comment suggested a celebration in honor of the breakout Souls of Mischief track "93 'til Infinity". The idea turned into a street festival on San Pablo in Oakland that was so wildly successful that they're bringing it back for another round. The lineup includes local up-and-comers that have recently been mentioned on The Bay Bridged, such as Richie Cunning, The Seshen, A-1, and [...]

A-1 – "Summertime Sadness" (playing New Parish 5/10/13)

San Francisco MC A-1 just released a new track, "Summertime Sadness", where he rhymes over a Ryan Hemsworth remix of Lana Del Rey's track of the same name. This isn't the first time A-1 has rapped over a Lana Del Rey sample – "Now You Do" from The Thurl Tape uses Flosstradamus' "Lana's Theme" as its beat. While "Summertime Sadness" is well, very sad, Thurl Tape has a some more lighthearted material that does a great job complementing his sometimes serious lyrics. A-1 has been gaining momentum over the past year, being named to the 2012 Thizzler Bay Area Freshman [...]
