Video: Kai Straw – "The American Dream (Suburban Part 1)"

San Francisco's Kai Straw is a MC and producer on a mission. "I'm looking to take a steak knife to the heart of hip-hop and replace it with a grinding engine pumping battery acid, art, honesty and beautiful and/or ugly music," he explained to me via email. He also isn't a fan of much of the Bay Area hip-hop scene. "As a city, San Francisco is known to be forward thinking...Yet our rap scene is full of materialistic, objectifying, drug-addled songs that attempt to compensate for their own stupidity through drowning all of it in trunk-rattling bass." When you listen [...]

Stream James The Giant's debut EP before it's released

If there’s one characteristic that divides good folk music from cheesy, hokey folk, it’s the songwriter’s openness to delivering songs that sound simple and honest. James The Giant certainly falls in the category of the former, fearless in giving his music the strength of basic, raw folk. The album’s concept cuts to a story that is raw as any folk standard. “Two Weeks on the Ocean”, the first single off James The Giant’s self titled EP, delivers the true story of the singer/songwriter’s loss of his little brother to the war in Afghanistan in 2009. The song paints a picture [...]

Destruction Unit announces U.S. / European tour dates, shares first single from upcoming LP

Arizona's noise punk outfit Destruction Unit just wrapped up a national tour but isn't planning on staying put for long. The band just released the first single off of its upcoming LP, Deep Trip, and the disorienting five-minute track is somewhat of a reflection of what the group has in store for the rest of the year. "The World on Drugs" is a manic offering that overflows with massive guitar barrages and heavy feedback, leaving not a moment of breathing room for listeners to really process what's going on. The five desert dwellers of Destruction Unit have found themselves in the same [...]

Steel Cranes – "Boat Song"

"Who is this and where in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster did they come from?" That was the first thought that ran through my head when I opened the link to "Boat Song", the lead single off Steel Cranes' forthcoming debut, Ouroboros. The answer is pretty straightforward: Steel Cranes is a loud-as-hell rock duo comprised of Amanda Schukle on drums and Tracy Shapiro on vocals and guitar, and they hail from Oakland. According to the band, they met in early 2012 when Schukle grabbed a late night snack at the neighborhood joint where Shapiro was working, and within [...]

Fuzz announces debut LP, streaming single "Loose Sutres"

We knew the news would come eventually, and thankfully it came sooner rather than later. Fuzz, the SF-based trio comprised of Charlie Moothart (guitar), Roland Cosio (bass), and Ty Segall (drums, vocals), recently announced that they will release their self-titled, debut full-length on October 1 via In The Red. They also treated their fans to a nice little something – the album's first single "Loose Sutres", which features more of the hard-hitting, sludge-tastic, psychedelic throwback metal sound that we've come to know through the band's first two 7-inches. The new LP will be fêted with a lengthy tour, starting off [...]

Video: Cool Ghouls – "Queen Sophie"

Photo: Daniel Johnston Earlier today, Phono del Sol performers Cool Ghouls premiered their video for "Queen Sophie" over on Impose, and like all things involving the Ghouls, it packs as much fun as possible into four minutes. Filmed in a San Francisco apartment, it's basically chronicling an afternoon at Cool Ghouls headquarters from the perspective of a model train. Apparently alcohol was involved. Watch it, smile, then buy your tickets for Phono del Sol and prepare to have the Cool Ghouls make you smile some more. We've already given you plenty of reasons to show up early to Phono del [...]

Antwon releases 7" on Suicide Squeeze Records

San Jose punk rocker-turned-rapper Antwon is blowing up this summer with two California festival dates and a debut vinyl release. His "Dying in the Pussy" b/w "Life Is What You Make It" 7-inch single is out now on Suicide Squeeze Records. The two-song EP is available worldwide both digitally and as a limited edition vinyl release with 250 copies on white and black marble vinyl and 500 copies on solid black. My marble copy just came in the mail a few days ago and fits in beautifully with my "#gothsummer" rotation. You know this shit will eventually sell out. Get [...]
