Craft Spells – “After the Moment”

Craft Spells - "After the Moment" From the fertile Stockton indie scene -- okay, all jokes aside, what percentage of write-ups about Craft Spells mention the one other band that indie music fans know came from California's Sunrise Seaport? For serious Stockton heads, there's a Facebook group dedicated to discussing Stockton music memories. For the rest of us, there's Justin Vallesteros, whose latest single (via Pitchfork) bonds its jangly guitar to an insistent 80s dance beat. This one deserves to be a hit in the dance clubs and the headphones. The "After the Moment" single is out on 1/18; Craft [...]

Discuss: How much is too much to pay for a record?

Maybe I'm swimming against the tide, but I still like to buy records. Hopefully, you do too, and if you're like me, it's a habit that puts a fairly big dent in your wallet. Actually, let me revise that earlier statement. I love buying records. I love browsing at record stores, flipping through the rows of albums, looking closely at the cover art, and then--this is the part I don't love--grimacing at the prices. Is it just me, or are indie record prices getting a little out of hand? It was not particularly surprising when major labels started charging $20 [...]

Sunbeam Rd. – “Circular Breathing/Memory Loss”

SF's Sunbeam Rd. just released this free two-song single of indie rock laced with prog and pop. The band's pulled away some of the density found on their Turtles, Magnets, Animals EP, granting the melodies more room to (apologies in advance) breathe. Great harmonies on the A-side too. Sunbeam Rd. is performing at Cafe Du Nord on January 20th (8pm, $10) with Worker Bee, Sleeptalks, and Nick Reinhart (of Tera Melos).

John Vanderslice releases new song and album trailer, announces fancy bundles for pre-order

John Vanderslice - "Sea Salt" In addition to the Stereogum-premiered/Yours Truly-directed album trailer above, John Vanderslice has announced that pre-orders are now available for White Wilderness, his collaborative album with Minna Choi and the Magik*Magik Orchestra. Not just any pre-orders, either, but some bundles that are pretty damn tempting. As the name might suggest, the "Platinum Bundle" is the most extravagant (and, yes, most costly), but check out what you get in the package: * A vinyl copy of John Vanderslice's self-released, limited edition, tour-only EP Green Grow the Rushes * Copies of both John Vanderslice's 7" singles on Dead [...]
